Terry Gomes: Gomesongs

The Return of Johnny Heart

(Terry Gomes)
I've always admired song lyrics that begin
with narrators who seem firm in their convictions, but who reveal
themselves to be much less resolute by the end.
Written in 1998, this jazzy pop song follows this path. At the time I was writing material for female singers. The title name came from a kind and humourous old fellow I worked with when I was much younger.
"I heard that you were back in town,
It's funny now you come around,
Before my wedding day.
You left me here so long ago,
Said I wasn't what you were looking for,
I missed you anyway.
Time has healed the wound,
There's nothing to resume.
Johnny Heart I loved you,
Before I knew how.
You held my world in your hands,
But that was then and this is now..."
